JIMMY EDWARD BIOGRAPHY
Jimmy Edward started his musical career at the age of 12. He performed as a vocalist with various San Antonio based bands, and for several years he starred as an entertainer in one of that city's popular night spots. He was given an opportunity to perform with a band called Sunny & The Sunliners because the leader/vocalist of the group was hospitalized with vocal chord problems. Jimmy was only 16 years old, but his talent really impressed everyone.
When several members of the Sunny & The Sunliners decided to go on their own, they appointed Rudy Guerra, one of the band members, as leader. Jimmy accepted the position as lead vocalist, and they became known as The Latin Breed Band. Jimmy became very popular as a member of The Latin Breed, and his powerful musical delivery was often compared to that of his singing idol, Tom Jones. Jimmy performed several years with the Latin Breed, but the time came when he and Rudy received the message of salvation. They made their decision to serve the Lord Jesus Christ.
Rudy gave notice to the group that he would be leaving his position as leader within a few months. Seven months later, it was time for he and Jimmy to leave the band. However, Jimmy did not share Rudy's faith. He was concerned about income to support his family, so he stayed. After a couple of years, Jimmy decided to leave the Latin Breed and start his own group. He was successful for a few years, but things were never the same, especially after making his decision to serve the Lord. Although he was determined to be successful in the entertainment business, God would not let him forget the promise he had made.
Jimmy began to run from the Lord, as is common to many of us who find ourselves scared. The enemy terrified him with the worries of how he was going to support himself if he left his fans. He was trapped. It was obvious to those around him that he loved the Lord. Every time a person would talk about the things of God, Jimmy's eyes would fill up with tears. He had a tender heart, and more so now that Jesus was the lover of his soul. He continued to fight God's call on his life, trying to drown out God's truth by turning to the things of the world, but he found no consolation there. When he finally hit bottom, he could only look up. He asked God's forgiveness and mercy, and God heard his prayer. He began to travel with Rudy to cities and towns across America, sharing the love of Jesus.
Jimmy is now on his own. His travels take him throughout, telling the story of how Jesus saved his soul from death, and his life from certain destruction. His love for the things of God is a witness to his many fans, and he tells everyone about the Lord Jesus Christ.
Tejano music legend Jimmy Edward began performing live at a very young age in San Antonio, TX, while participating in different traditional Mexican music outfits. The opportunity to become a professional came when he joined Sunny & the Sunliners, teaming up with Rudy Guerra in the successful group Latin Breed soon after. Captivated by Latin contemporary Christian music, Edward released a Latin gospel album, Cristianos (Christians), in April 1996. Edward released two more full-lengths, Tejano All Stars and My Special Album, over the course of the next few years. ~ Drago Bonacich, All Music Guide
